Esao Andrews is an intriguing artist whose work ranges between the comically grotesque and simple, understated beauty. A native of Arizona, Andrews has developed a signature cast of dark and surreal characters, blending erotic and sometimes bizarre images in a manner that is often compared to other American surrealists like Mark Ryden and Joe Sorren. His oil paintings explore haunted and lonely landscapes, portraits and scenes that merge surrealism with real world emotion.
And while the majority of work shown here is typically dark, he also shows wonderful diversification. In one moment, he can create a bizarre schoolroom portrait that would give Tim Burton the willies («Fayette Middle School») while in another he presents serene and thoughtful portraits that are evocative («The Haircut») and playful («Megan»). In between you get a whole lot of fun if somewhat unsettling weirdness.
